Responsible for providing health services to animals at the City shelter. Also responsible for providing public education on animal health.
Essential Job Functions
Perform sterilization surgeries on adopted/adoptable animals.
Monitor animals during surgery recovery.
Conduct and monitor health/behavior evaluations of impounded/quarantined animals including monitoring spread of communicable diseases.
Examine animals to assess their health and diagnose problems.
Treat and dress wounds.
Operate medical equipment, such as x-ray machines.
Prescribe medication.
Administering all necessary vaccines to animals.
Communicate with public and staff regarding animal care, diseases at the shelter, euthanasia and dangerous animal policies.
Advise staff on all veterinary care of impounded animals, policies regarding euthanasia and how to care for dangerous animals.
Provide required continued education to staff Animal Service Officers on animal welfare and general health topics.
Responsible for ordering and inventory of controlled substances.
Must be able to be on call to respond to impounded animals that are gravely sick/injured.
Perform detailed evaluations/necropsies for animal cruelty cases.
Minimum Education & Work Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) degree from a 4-year program at an accredited college of veterinary medicine 3 years of veterinary medicine experience
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills
Education/ Experience:
3-5 years of Veterinary experience
Excellent surgical skills
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Possess excellent communication and business skills
Basic knowledge of expert resources in various diseases, so help can be sought when needed
Skill in monitoring data collection and data entry to assure quality control
Extensive knowledge of diagnostic microbiology and serology for communicable diseases
Licenses & Certifications
Licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in Texas Valid Class C Texas driver's license
Physical Tasks & Working Conditions
The incumbent works in an indoor environment, as well as an outdoor environment responding to calls for service in the field; occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions. Shelter work and minimal on-call required.
