The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Western University is seeking an innovative scientist of international standing in One Health. One Health is an integrative, systems-level approach linking medical, sociological, economical, ecological, and animal/wildlife aspects to human health and disease. The successful candidate will take a leadership role as the Beryl Ivey Chair in One Health and will take part in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Interfaculty Program in Public Health as well as the School’s newly approved undergraduate and graduate programs in One Health. One Health is a collaborative concept recognizing that the health of humans is inextricably connected to the health of animals; and the environment; many emerging/re-emerging human diseases are linked to increasing contact between humans and animals, and environmental changes brought about by urbanization, globalization, and climate change. Addressing these unique challenges requires an interdisciplinary, systems-based, collaborative approach. The candidate should have demonstrated an understanding and application of One Health within his/her strong research program. Candidates should also have a commitment to and demonstrated aptitude for education and will be expected to teach and supervise students both at the undergraduate and the graduate levels. This integrated One Health education and research program is the first of its kind in Canada and will provide unparalleled depth of knowledge and interdisciplinary research skills to solve complex human health issues, placing Western at the forefront of a growing global initiative. Successful candidates should have the vision and skills required to promote the development of novel research and education in the One Health program and to form effective collaborative partnerships with colleagues from a wide range of scientific disciplines including but not limited to natural and basic sciences, social sciences, and clinical sciences.
A successful candidate holding a PhD or DVM or DVM/PhD in a relevant field will be appointed in a probationary (tenure-track) position at the level of Associate Professor or Full Professor depending on the qualifications, interests, and experience of the successful candidate. Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The candidate will be appointed in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in Schulich Medicine & Dentistry.
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has 40 full time faculty members, more than 32 full and part time graduate students and 6 staff. It is one of 21 departments in Schulich Medicine & Dentistry (http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/). The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Western University is affiliated with London Health Sciences Centre, one of Canada’s largest acute care teaching hospitals and St Joseph’s Health Care. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at London Health Sciences Centre provides a comprehensive range of specialized laboratory testing and clinical consultation to support diagnosis and monitor treatment of patients within London, Southwestern Ontario, nationally and internationally.
